A picture's worth a thousand words...and then some.

Whether or not you have ever given or received a Rorschach, most people have heard of it. You know, the famous ink blots that clinicians use as a projective test. The images (see example below) are fairly innocuous: it is the feelings that people project onto the images that provide the meat of the matter. I know that I am simplifying it, but you get the idea.

I thought of the Rorschach Test when reading about how President and First Lady Obama surprised their two daughters with a swing set earlier in the week (see photo above). Talk about a fairly innocuous picture - that of a playground-like contraption on the White House lawn. What was more interesting, however, were the reactions that CNN website readers projected onto the swingset photo. I am posting a few of the comments below. Responses ranged from positive, to negative, to sad, to scary. When it comes down to it, it is those types of feelings that are what many people in the US are experiencing right about now. Of course, anger and prejudice are present even in the best of times; but, poverty doesn't help. To paraphrase Freud, I guess that sometimes a swingset is not just a swingset:

Very cool! Enjoy, girls!

The girls still don't have a puppy.
