Twitter and Moms

It seems that Johnson & Johnson has pulled a recent ad for Motrin due to negative feedback that the advertisement got from "moms" on Twitter. OK, I know what you may be thinking. What the heck is Twitter? Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging network, that allows users to send and read other users' updates, called Tweets. A Tweet is text which can be up to 140 characters in length.

I became fascinated with Twitter about a year ago, during the presidential primary season. I still use it as a resource for getting updates regarding all kind of current news items, not just related to politics. After you spend some time on the site, you can develop a listing of Followers and Followees. You can be as social or non-social as you wish.

Well, back to Motrin. Recently a new ad for the product tried to appeal to moms and the physical ramifications of using a baby carrier to transport your infant/child. Some members of the target audience for the ad became offended at the tone of the ad, and a slew of negative comments (or Tweets you could say) began showing up on Twitter. I am attaching a link to the Twitter real time site of Tweets posted by "MotrinMoms:"

I know that Twitter has been getting more and more mainstream press, and has been used by many companies lately as a way to get their brand names out there. I guess like anything, that the use of social media by corporations/businesses can be a double-edged sword. I am attaching the front page of the Motrin website as of today:

I am also attaching the Motrin ad video below. See if you don't agree with me that something about the tone of woman on the ad seems oh so familiar to me. Hey, even Cher Horowitz (Silverstone's character in Clueless) can become a mom:
