Marcia, Marcia, Marcia

There has been much talk this week about the release of Maureen McCormick's autobiography, titled, "Here's the Story." Maureen McCormick played Marcia Brady on the 1970s series, The Brady Bunch. She writes candidly about her addiction to cocaine, Quaaludes, pills and mushrooms as she struggled to find work when the series was cancelled in 1974 after five seasons.

All this "Brady" talk got me thinking, that this is the first time that the United States will, hopefully, have a president in the White House who is one of the Brady Bunch generation. I am about the same age as the Obamas, and consider myself a card-carrying member of this Very Brady Club. Note - I would deny my devoutness to the Brady Bunch if I ever met a cast member of the Partridge Family - so don't quote me.

During the Democratic National Convention, Craig Robinson (Michelle Obama's brother) even made mention of the Obama-Brady connection when introducing his sister:
…Sometimes, when I look at the — the woman you’re about to hear from, it’s funny to think that this is the same person who used to wake me up early — and I mean early — on Christmas morning. This is the person who would play the piano to calm me down before my big games in high school. This is the person who, even though we were allowed only one hour of television a night, somehow managed to memorize every single episode of “The Brady Bunch.”

It is kind of fun to imagine what television shows were the favorites of those in public office. Perhaps John McCain was a Groucho Marx fan. Or maybe, Jack Benny. I picture George W. Bush as a Gunsmoke watcher. Jimmy Carter? Definitely a Waltons fan. How about Bill Clinton? Well, I can see him liking Dobie Gillis or Ozzie and Harriet. I can picture Bill being a fan of Ricky Nelson. And how about Sarah Palin? Well, she is a Brady Bunch generation person. But, somehow I see her being more of a fan of Little House on the Prairie or Grizzly Adams. I did hear that she could see Fantasy Island from her porch in Wasilla.
