A gambler, or just a schmuck?

Ok - Call me a bit of a chicken, but I was too cowardly to title this latest blog entry - "John McCain - what a schmuck." I saw the recent news on The Page website by Mark Halperin:

McCain is losing female voters “faster than Sarah Palin attracted them after the Republican convention.” Among women: Obama 55, McCain 38.

A part of me thought - John McCain could be in such a different place right now. He could have stood up for what he wanted and picked a Joe Lieberman or even a younger Eric Cantor. Or, if he wanted to have a female running mate, why not go for eBay CEO - Meg Whitman. But he didn't. How stupid does he think women are? Does he think that all of us who supported Hillary Clinton would suddenly jump on board for Sarah Palin? I would not have voted for McCain no matter whom he had picked as his running mate; but any level of respect that I had for him is surely diminishing. Palin has done terribly in her interviews with Charles Gibson and Katie Couric. Most likely, she will be totally derailed by Joe Biden. Heck, I am even planning to buy the popcorn to watch the show. But, it is this "most likely" that holds me back a little bit. Could Palin suprise everyone and do pretty well on Thursday night? There are websites that have videos of prior debates of hers (when she was running for governor) that show her giving a fairly good performance.

So - I'm back to my first comment. Is McCain a schmuck or just a gambler? That is why I included the Kenny Rogers video above. Maybe McCain is a gambler who figures - "I am old - I lost the last time - what do I have to lose besides another election? Let me cling to my conservative base to win, and when I get in office, I can do whatever the hell I want."

I guess that Thursday - 10/2/08 - will be the date that the above question gets answered. All I know is that at this point, I am a little bit too chicken to give a definite answer. I will "have to get back to you" on Friday morning. In the meantime, enjoy the Kenny Rogers video. I include another older video of Kenny below, before he had all of the facework done.
